I was diagnosed with COPD (emphysema) in 2012. By 2018, I was evaluated at COPD gold standard 3. I retired due to the disability. Breathing was tough and my mobility was very limited. By 2022, at 30% oxygen volume capacity, I became a prime candidate for the Zephyr lung valves and have sustained better health, mobility and almost 50% oxygen volume capacity ever since. I have been blessed, as these valves have kept me off of oxygen therapy. Of course air quality, climate changes, perfumes and most smells affect me negatively, so I have action plans that help alleviate my reactions in these situations. I treasure the increase in the quality of life that being a recipient of lung valves has afforded me. I get to enjoy activities with my only son, Derek, and his only son, Derek Jr, my lovable 7 year old grandson. I also have the energy to volunteer in various community non-profit endeavors, that makes life during retirement so much more meaningful to me. I have the opportunities to advocate for equities in housing, home ownership, enviromental justice...and now, to add lung health issues while my voice is still strongest.
More research is needed to treat lung diseases more effectively, we have the scientific knowledge and technologies. Let's keep the resources flowing, we can afford it. All of us deserve the best quality of life, no matter if afflictions are due to personal or man-made environmental concerns. We all use our Lungs to breathe in the Air of Life.
