American Lung Association: NIH Leadership is Critical in Efforts to Improve Lung Health

Today, Dr. Monica Bertagnolli was confirmed as the Director of the National Institutes of Health. The American Lung Association President and CEO Harold Wimmer issued the following statement regarding this announcement:

“The American Lung Association extends our congratulations to Dr. Bertagnolli. The Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a critical position to direct lifesaving research on lung disease including lung cancer, and the NIH is a crucial partner of the American Lung Association in our efforts to end lung cancer and improve lung health. Dr. Monica Bertagnolli has dedicated her life to cancer research and improving the lives of people with this disease.

“To achieve the Cancer Moonshot goals and find new treatments and cures for lung disease, NIH needs strong support and sustained funding levels from Congress. We look forward to working with Dr. Bertagnolli as our work continues to advocate for sustained, robust and predictable funding increases for NIH. Investments in research are investments in hope.”
