American Lung Association Earns an Impressive 99 Out of 100 Score for Exceptional Commitment to Mission, Strong Financial Stewardship

The American Lung Association’s commitment to its mission, strong financial health, accountability and transparency have earned it a 4-star rating, with an overall score of 99 points out of 100 from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator.

This is the 5th year that the American Lung Association has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, which is the highest rating that a non-profit organization can receive. To achieve a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator, an organization must exceed or meet best practices across all assessment areas, which include Impact and Results, Accountability and Finance, Leadership and Adaptability, and Culture and Community. The American Lung Association earned almost a perfect score in the rating system.

“Organizations like Charity Navigator are critical to ensure the transparency of non-profit organizations and to help people know that their donations are being used in the most effective way to help advance the mission of a charity,” said Harold Wimmer, National President and CEO of the American Lung Association. “We are proud of the important work we do at the American Lung Association to save lives and improve lung health, and that 90 cents out of every dollar donated goes to program services nationwide.”

Charity Navigator is one of the leading evaluators of charity organizations and rates more than 200,000 501(c)(3) nonprofits. Charity Navigator’s rating system focuses on the cost-effectiveness and overall health of a charity’s programs, including measures of stability, efficiency, and sustainability. The metrics inform donors of not just where their dollars are going but what their dollars are doing.

The Lung Association has long-been the trusted champion for lung health. Nearly 120 years ago, the organization pioneered the model of using education, advocacy and research to virtually eradicate tuberculosis in the U.S. Using these same principles, the Lung Association works to end all lung diseases, including lung cancer and COVID-19.

The Lung Association also has a GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency and is a Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance Accredited Charity. Learn more about the Charity Navigator Rating System here, and about the American Lung Association’s work at Lung.org.
