Health Experts Call for Passage of Assembly Bill 914

Bill by Robert Garcia tackles pollution hotspots harming communities.

Released this week, the American Lung Association’s 26th “State of the Air” report highlights that Californians are still facing the most difficult air pollution challenges in the United States. Assembly Bill 914 (R. Garcia, District 50) would provide guidance for development of a statewide clean air safety net to address major local pollution hotspots. AB 914 has the strong support of the Lung Association and organizations representing nurses, lung health experts, asthma coalitions and more.

The Honorable Robert Garcia, Assembly District 50

The “State of the Air” report highlights the urgency of our clean air agencies having the tools and resources they need to address pollution magnets. My AB 914 would ensure statewide direction to protect communities and reduce deadly pollution from pollution hotspots.

Mariela Ruacho, Senior Manager, Clean Air Advocacy with the American Lung Association in California.

Californians face the most polluted air in the United States, and too many Californians face additional burdens due to diesel emissions always surrounding them. There is broad health-based support for AB 914 to provide critical relief to families overburdened by costly, traumatic health emergencies caused by industrial pollution in our most vulnerable neighborhoods.

Notable California findings from the “State of the Air” 2025 report

Nearly 9 of 10 Californians (88%) live in a community impacted by unhealthy ozone and/or particle pollution.

California communities dominate the lists of the most polluted in America:  Nine California cities appear on at least one of the Most Polluted lists in “State of the Air” 2025: Bakersfield, El Centro, Fresno, Los Angeles, Redding, Sacramento, San Diego, the SF Bay Area, Visalia.  (Read more at www.lung.org/sota)
