Lung Association, Tobacco Free Indiana Coalition, Lauds Indiana for Raising Tobacco Tax

$2 increase in cigarette tax, a welcome step for Hoosiers’ public health

The following is a statement from American Lung Association in Indiana’s Advocacy Director Tiffany Nichols with regards to increase of Indiana’s cigarette tax from $.995 to $2.99

“The American Lung Association, in partnership with the Tobacco Free Indiana Coalition, applauds the Indiana State Legislature for voting to raise the tobacco tax by $2 with additional tax increases on other tobacco products.

This is a well-established, evidence-based policy that will improve health outcomes across our state and help curb tobacco use and initiation, especially among youth. Increasing the tobacco tax is a win-win-win for public health, it will help prevent kids from starting to use tobacco products, will help urge Hoosiers to quit their tobacco addiction and will raise important revenue for the state.

The Lung Association in Indiana applauds Governor Mike Braun and the legislature’s leadership for making this strong public health effort standing up to Big Tobacco. Putting Indiana’s children and community before tobacco industry profits. We look forward to continuing our work with the state and the Governor on the public health of all Hoosiers.”
