Every year, thousands of firefighters race up hundreds of stairs in full firefighter gear weighing over 40 pounds during Lung Association Fight For Air Climbs in more than 40 cities nationwide. This year, the cover of the calendar features Chuck Roberts, a retired firefighter with Eagle Fire Department in Wisconsin. He has participated in the Fight For Air Climb Milwaukee for 13 years and raised $8,707 last year for the Lung Association.
“The mission of the American Lung Association hits really close to home with firefighters, which is why we see such amazing support from first responders at our events. These heroes are regularly exposed to smoke, gasses, chemicals and other substances that can be damaging to their lungs, putting them at an increased risk for lung disease,” said American Lung Association President and CEO Harold Wimmer. “We are dedicated to ending lung disease for firefighters, and all Americans. We invite everyone to join our efforts by signing up for a local Fight For Air Climb and purchasing a calendar.”
Respiratory diseases remain a significant health issue for firefighters and emergency responders. Firefighters are at a higher risk of developing chronic issues, including lingering cough, hoarseness, asthma, and allergies and in more extreme cases, may be diagnosed with lung or bronchial cancer.
The 2023 calendar also includes fire safety tips, statistics on how fires affect our lung health and tips for your Fight For Air Climb. All proceeds will support the American Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through education, advocacy and research.
